March 7th War, Druid Perfume at Painted Lady

Druid Perfume
I really need to get a better camera. Warn Defever played one of the coolest noise sets ever as "war." He passed out tambourines and other shakey noise makers to the crowd before playing some chirpy, weirdo noise stuff that built into a loud crescendo then went back into a semi musical bit by way of an electric harmonica or something. Druid Perfume was next. I have to see them more. It was awesome. Musically it's- almost blues rock-y with a saxophone, but wilder than that. If George Thorogood and the Destroyers took a shit load of acid and other drugs then got possessed and had a psychedelic freak out it would look like this. There was a lot of crowd surfing and weird dancing. Their singer Jamie Easter got slammed into the stage a bunch of times. At one point he grabbed someone, pinned him on stage, started yelling about how he was sick and needed to take his medicine then got all uncomfortably close to him. Then at some other point he ditched his mic in favor of yelling into one of the stage lights he ripped off the ceiling. go see these guys it's awesome.

Bill Bondsmen March 6 '09

So, last night I saw the other band I wanted to see at the Hamtramck Blowout, the Bill Bondsmen. Last time I tried to see them at the blowout totally fucking sucked. Until they finally let us in for free. Still, I vowed never to pay for one of those goddamn wristbands. Oops. So the Bondsmen played a pretty good fucking set. Their guitar player Amado totally jumped up on the bar and pissed off the venue. I'd have a shitty camera phone picture of that if hadn't been too busy laughing. The sound at Jeans totally sucked. I think they played new stuff, but between shitty sound and JOOSE premium malt beverage it kinda blurred.

March 5th '09 Blowout w/ Boywife and UFO Factory w/ Wolf Eyes

I got to the Painted Lady to see one of maybe 3 or 4 bands playing the Hamtramck Blowout that I actually give a shit about. I'm not talking shit, there are just a lot of bands there that I don't know and most of them play the type of music I couldn't care less about... ok maybe I'm talking shit a little. Boywife plays a catchy, kind of poppy garage punk indie rock- if I knew a bit more about Indie Rock bands maybe I'd have some bands to compare them to. But they play some good rock, sometimes there's yelling, sometimes they're playing a catchy hook and sometimes they're shredding on guitar. It's good. But I got to the Painted Lady to see them to find a group of kids hanging out front. Yep, the owner or whoever hadn't shown up to let them in. Nice. So I went back home, ate a bowl of cereal, then went back to enjoy the show. Everything was good by the time I got back.
Boywife played a really good set. Not too long to where it dragged on, not too short to where I couldn't get wholly into it. More local bands need to follow their example and play perfect length sets.
Left after Boywife to go see Wolf Eyes. Wolf Eyes rule, man, so I was excited. Plus I've never been to the UFO Factory before, so I was pumped to see that. Yep, It was all nice and shiny-silver in a loft or something in Eastern Market. Great venue! I forget the name of the first band that played, it was pretty good though. Aaron Dilloway played next. His set started out with some loud waves of sound, then went into a quieter repeating croak, then back into a total explosion of crazed loudness. That thing he's got in his mouth? It's fucking cool!
Then Wolf Eyes played and it was totally sweet. Guitar, some sort of home-made guitar, crazy ass horns, and suit cases full of weird re-wired shit made for one sweet set. If you don't like Wolf Eyes there's probably nothing I can say in a review to make you change your mind. After that I returned to Hamtramck to check some random bands out. Wound up at the THC seeing this band called Sex Ghost. It was some girl and guy singing, and maybe free style rapping while dicking around on a huge table full of samples and mixers. It was pretty funny, they probably put on a good show when their shit is more together. Plus they handed out charm bracelet charms. This hipster girl give me a Pin from her band Public Pubes that had opened. It sounds similar to Sex Ghost, lots of weird beats, samples, and a guy and a girl saying dirty things. That's totally cute. Both from Lansing, apparently there is a scene there for this weirdness. Probably one in Detroit too that I don't know about. While I was watching that I missed Timmy's Organism. Oops.

Shitfucker 7"

Raw and belligerent punk noise from detroit. This Shitfucker 7" is a blast of loud guitar noises and evil. The vocals I can understand kind of remind me of GISM and other crazed Japanese bands, with shrieks and grunts mixed in for good measure. It's all doused in half a ton of reverb. Recorded on an 8-track, probably in a fucked up and disgusting basement somewhere. Sometimes the tape hiss and guitar sound the same. The riffs are there, and they're pretty fucking heavy, but they're buried in a tomb of feedback. Handsome printed insert! The spine is sewn by machine. Fucking crazy.
